The South Waterfront is aptly located a bit south of downtown and on the Willamette River. This area features a brand new development (known as the River Blocks) that has several new residential towers. One of the main anchors for this area is the OHSU Center for Health and Healing which is an extension of the Oregon Health Sciences University. The hospital and main campus for OHSU are located on Marquam Hill, located directly West of the River Blocks. The newly constructed center has a sky gondola connecting the South Waterfront center to the main campus up on the hill. Since this is a newer development, it doesn’t have a lot of the business amenities that you would find in longer established neighborhoods. The area does have a couple of coffee shops and restaurants that serve residents. Look for more to come in the future! For now you can enjoy a fusion of French and Japanese cuisines at stylish Le Hana (located in the Meriwether building, 503-467-7533) or try out the new Vietnamese Bistro, Bambuza (located in the John Ross building, 503-206-6330). A little south of the River Blocks, you can also find the long time Portland standby, The Old Spaghetti Factory (503-222-5375).
Under construction in this area right now is The Mirabella, which is slated to be a very stylish and modern looking “continuing care retirement community.” Also under construction is the 3720, another Portland condominium tower that switched gears during construction and will now end up as a luxury apartment building. The 3720 is a glass tower shaped like a two halves of a circle that have been shifted along its diameter. It looks to be about as tall as the John Ross (see below) and will be a nice compliment to the other buildings already constructed there.
This area has great access to I-5 and is on a streetcar line that connects residents to downtown within a couple of minutes. Its location also makes biking to work a snap. The condo towers in this area offer excellent views of the River, downtown, and mountains.
John’s Landing lies to the West of the River Blocks. As you creep up the hill from the river, you will run into mostly single-family houses and townhome style condo complexes. Many of these properties offer fantastic views of the river and mountains. The townhomes in this area are a great way to be close to downtown and get a lot of square footage for the price compared to the single-family homes in this area. With a townhome, you can get views and an established neighborhood but with newer construction and modern floor plans.
